The Seder Plate


Passover is a communal event and it is observed with a meal, in families, in groups, and even over the Internet. The Seder plate is laden with the symbolic elements that are shared by all at the table.

The Seder plate:

1. Zeroa - shank bone representing the sacrificed lamb (not handled)
2. Beitza - roasted hard-boiled egg, symbol of mourning
3. Maror /Chazeret  - horseradish for harsh tears
4. Maror /Chazeret - onion for bitter tears
5. Charoset - nuts, apple, cinnamon paste to resemble mortar and brick
6. Karpas - parsley or lettuce to be dipped into salted water, then eaten

Individuals sometimes combine the horseradish and nut/apple paste with matzah for a sandwich.

Passover is the first of the commanded feasts or appointments with God. It commemorates the deliverance of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt. And it is observed in the spring of each year during the month of Nisan.
